Genesis
4:25-26
“And
Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: for God, said she, hath appointed me
another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew. 26
And to Seth, to him also there was born
a son; and he called his name Enos [or Enosh]: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.”

“We
have come as far as the 5th chapter of Genesis, really chapter 4,
verse 25 gives us our change of tone.
We’ve been looking at the line of Cain, his failure, his descendants to
the 7th generation. And in
verse 25 of chapter 4, it says “And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a
son, and called his name Seth: for God, said
she, hath appointed” so that’s his name “Appointed” “me another seed
instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.” (verse 25)
Now as we get into this next chapter, we’re going to read that the
days of Adam after he begat Seth were eight hundred years, and he begat sons
and daughters, not a lot of information.
We don’t know how many that were born, possibly between Abel and
Seth. But here it seems that through the
Messianic line of Promise, made in Genesis 3:15, that through “thy seed,” the
woman’s seed, the serpent’s head would be crushed, that Satan would bruise his
heel, but the One would be coming in regards to Redemption and atonement and
would crush Satan’s head. That line,
Messianic line, our family line picks up here, through a new birth,
interesting, Seth coming on the scene.
And she said ‘God has given me another seed instead of Abel whom
Cain slew.’ “And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called
his name Enos [or Enosh]: then
began men to call upon the name of the LORD.”
(verse 26) Now,
I don’t know if your Bible gives you that in a negative context, we’ve switched
to the line of Seth, it’s a difficult thing to tackle in translation, but it
seems to be that Seth names his son Enos, which means “Mortal,” it means
“Frail,” recognizing that frailty, man’s mortality, but at the same time it
says, men began to call on the name of the LORD
again. There’s Seth and his line, and
Adam must have taken time and talked to him, and said ‘There’s a promise
that’s been made, and certainly it wasn’t through your brother Abel, because he
was slaughtered by Cain, God’s blessing is not upon your brother Cain, Seth,
it’s upon you. And there’s a promise
that’s going to come through your life, and it’s in regards to the LORD
and promises he’s made.’ So I believe it’s saying, in the midst of
this dark generation, we’re going to look at it, it was a very, very dark time
in lots of ways. Still there is a
remnant calling upon the LORD. And as I believe in the day that we live in,
with all of the insanity going on in the world, and all of the things taking
place in our culture, there are still those, God always has a remnant, that are
calling on the name of the LORD. And who knows what God might do before Christ
returns, and we’re praying that we may see a great ingathering here in our
city. So in these days men began to call
on the name of the LORD,
it seems like something healthy spiritually is happening.”
Genesis
5:1-32
“This
is the book of the generations of Adam.
In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him; 2
male and female created he them; and
blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created. 3
And Adam lived an hundred and thirty
years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called
his name Seth: 4 and
the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters: 5
and all the days that Adam lived were
nine hundred and thirty years: and he
died. 6 And
Seth lived an hundred and five years, and begat Enos: 7
and Seth lived after he begat Enos eight
hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters: 8
and all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years: and he died. 9
And Enos lived ninety years, and begat
Cainan: 10 and
Enos lived after he begat Cainan eight hundred and fifteen years, and begat
sons and daughters: 11 and
all the days of Enos were nine hundred and five years: and he died. 12
And Cainan lived seventy years, and
begat Mahalaleel: 13 and
Cainan lived after he begat Mahalaleel eight hundred and forty years, and begat
sons and daughters: 14 and
all the days of Cainan were nine hundred and ten years: and he died. 15
And Mahalaleel lived sixty and five
years and begat Jared: 16 and
Mahalaleel lived after he begat Jared eight hundred and thirty years, and begat
sons and daughters: 17 and
all the days of Mahalaleel were eight hundred ninety and five years: and he died. 18
And Jared lived an hundred sixty and two
years, and he begat Enoch: 19 and
Jared lived after be begat Enoch eight hundred years, and begat sons and
daughters: 20 and
all the days of Jared were nine hundred sixty and two years: and he died. 21
And Enoch lived sixty and five years,
and begat Methuselah: 22 and
Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat
sons and daughters: 23 and
all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty five years: 24
and Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him. 25
And Methuselah lived an hundred eighty
and seven years, and begat Lamech. 26
And Methuselah lived after he begat
Lamech seven hundred eighty and two years, and begat sons and daughters: 27
and all the days of Methuselah were nine
hundred sixty and nine years: and he
died. 28 And
Lamech lived an hundred eighty and two years, and begat a son: 29
and he called his name Noah, saying,
This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands,
because of the ground which the LORD
hath cursed. 30 And
Lamech lived after he begat Noah five hundred ninety and five years, and begat
sons and daughters: 31 and
all the days of Lamech were seven hundred seventy and seven years: and he died. 32
And Noah was five hundred years
old: and Noah begat Shem, Ham, and
Japheth.”
The
Line Of Seth
Seth
“And
then chapter 5 begins by saying “This is the book of the generations
of Adam. In the day that God created
man, in the likeness of God made he him;” (verse 1) The only other place you find “the book
of the generations” is in Matthew chapter 1, where it says “the book of the
generations of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham,” this is
“This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the
likeness of God made he him;” (verse 1) Now
we’re going to come to a contrast, we’re following now the line through Seth,
from Adam to Noah. And Noah and his
three sons and their wives and his wife will survive the Flood, and that’s our
line then to Abraham, and we follow that same line from Abraham to Christ. And that’s all in regards to the promised
seed in chapter 3:15. So that’s why it’s
following along this way, “This is the book of the generations of
Adam. In the day that God created man,
in the likeness of God made he him; male and female created he them; and
blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created.”
(verses 1-2) Now, Adam lived, now
it’s interesting, it’s just an aside, I don’t know if it means anything, the
word “lived” enters in here again.
Nowhere through Cain’s short history does it say any of his descendants
lived. Well they did, but it’s just
interesting, say, do whatever you want with it.
And Adam lived “And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years,” now
we’re only going to get to the names, we’re going to follow the genealogy here,
that are essential to the path that God is taking us to Noah. It’s going to say that each one of them has
other sons and daughters that are unnamed.
We’ll find out when we get to heaven who the rest of our family is. But we’re following a specific line. So, “And Adam lived an hundred and thirty
years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and
called his name Seth:” (verse 3) isn’t that interesting, he was created in
God’s image and likeness, sadly this son is born in Adam’s likeness, after his
image, “and called his name Seth:” So when Adam is 130 years old Seth is
born. Now obviously if Adam was 130
years old, Eve was too, they seem to be born in the same year. You and your rib are always born in the same
year, just as an aside. And it’s
interesting, because it tells us right off the bat that Adam’s line is a fallen
line. Seth is not in the image and
likeness of God, he’s in the image and likeness of Adam. And we’re going to follow this, Adam’s going
to live 930 years, which means he’s going to live through Seth, Enos, Cainan,
Mahalaleel, Jared, Enoch, Methuselah into the life of Lamech, 55 years into
Lamech’s life, he’s going to life 930 years.
He’s going to live up until 28 years in fact of Noah’s birth. And he may have been a great influence on
Lamech, because Lamech names his son Noah, because it means “rest” or “comfort.” And you can just imagine, the earth is
filled, no doubt, with millions of people by the time Lamech is born. [Morrison estimated 6 billion] And Adam, just what was it like for Enos or
Jared or Enoch, who was taken, or his son Methuselah to sit with Adam? And Adam was old by then. To sit with him and say ‘What was it like
on the other side, what was God’s face like?
What made him smile?, what was the look in his eyes? what was the tone
of his voice? what was the world like without sin, without this craziness we’re
surrounded with? What was Paradise like,
what was it like?’ Just it’s hard
for us to imagine. Adam is dying,
Satan’s been proved a liar, he said ‘You shall not surely die,’ and from
the time Adam ate of the fruit he’s been dying, he dies after 930 years, a slow
process, but it’s going on all the time.
“and the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred
years: and he begat sons and daughters:
and all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years: and he died.” (verses 4-5) and he was probably ready by then. We’re not sure of the deaths in Cain’s
family, we know that Lamech, the seventh from Cain, killed a young man who
attacked him, we know that Abel has died at the hands of his brother Cain, we
know Enoch will be taken [and we don’t really know what that means, we’ll find
out later]. Is Adam the first natural
death? We’re not sure. You see the first natural, well it would be
unnatural to them, but to us, 930 years and he died. “And Seth lived an hundred and five years,
and begat Enos:” (verse 6) Now
Seth’s name means “Appointed,” so he must have heard that his whole life, ‘God
has a purpose for you,’ we don’t know if he’s just aware of human frailty
and failure, he names his son Enos, which is “mortal.” “and Seth lived after he begat Enos eight
hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters: and all the days of Seth were nine hundred and
twelve years: and he died.” (verses 7-8)
We’re going to hear that here, I
believe, nine times, “he died, and he died, and he died.” There’s one time it’s omitted, that’s in the
life of Enoch, because God will take him.
Over and over and over “he died.”
OK, you’re a visitor here tonight, and you’re thinking ‘I knew it, my
relatives are out of their minds, here they are talking about these
900-year-old guys, these people are idiots, they’re Bible-thumpers, they’re
mindless.’ But thank you
[laughter]. As you study the Scripture,
and there are books written by scientists, Henry Morrison’s book is a great
commentary, The Genesis Record, a PhD, he’s a scientist. This is before the vapour canopy, we believe
the earth was surrounded by a vapour canopy, this is before that dissolved [if
in fact it ever existed, we don’t know that either, we weren’t there, as I’ve
said before, we’ll have to wait till we see Jesus and ask him at the Wedding
Feast of the Lamb (Revelation 19:7-9)].
This is when infrared and ultraviolet lights are filtered out, this is
when there’s gene frequency that’s pure in the human race. You know, the human heart, they feel the
human heart could beat over 500 years if it didn’t get stuffed up with cholesterol
and stress and everything else that mess with it these days. You know, with man, the longevity is
there. It says when Christ returns and
restores a Kingdom for a thousand years (Revelation 20:4-6), longevity is going
to be restored again. A child will die
at a hundred it says. So imagine this,
what was the learning curve like, I always like to think about that, you learn
more in the first three years of your life than you really do after that. You learn an idiomatic language by
observation in two to three years, which we can’t get a computer to do yet [now
with A.I. it may be possible]. If your
learning curve is your first 100 years, you don’t come into your terrible-twos
until you’re 80. If your learning curve is your first 100
years, what’s that like? I love to
listen to harp players, and I don’t play one.
I’m a guitar player, but I think I’ll never have time to do that. But you know what would really be cool, if I
could say ‘You know, I’ll get that in the next century, between two and
three hundred I’ll learn to be a harp player, I got other things I’m busy with
right now.’ That would really be
cool. The over-50’s fellowship, that
would be Sunday-school, we’d have to have an over-800 fellowship. Interesting to just look at this. You know, it’s the same thing with dinosaurs,
where did they come from, you know, dinosaur eggs when they find them, they’re
all about the size of Ostrich eggs. You
look at a brontosaurus the egg should be about 13 feet long you’d think. [The biology of those huge animals dictated
that they had extremely fast growth rates, they started out real small as
hatchlings, and grew in body size and mass really quickly.] But reptiles grow until they die. You have soft tissue that grows till you die,
that’s why when you get older, your nose gets bigger, your ears hang down,
because your soft tissue continues to grow, but you have growth rates in the
skeletal structure that stops you, but reptiles grow till they die. So you see a Nile croc that’s 18, 20-foot
long that’s a hundred years old, what would they look like in 500, 600
years? Before the Flood. How did we get there? [I believe Pastor Joe is implying dinosaurs
walked with man. We know from decay of
radioactive isotopes which is very accurate, (not Carbon-14 dating) that the
dinosaurs really did die when a 6.25 square mile diameter meteor struck the
Yucatan Peninsula 66 million years ago, which kind of backs up either the Gap
Theory for Genesis 1, or the Theistic evolutionary theory for Creation, coupled
to time-dilation, which takes us back 15.75 billion years to the Big Bang, when
God started it all. You choose, we’ll
find out whose correct, again, as the Wedding Feast of the Lamb.]
Enos,
Cainan, Mahalaleel, Jared & Enoch
Enos,
he had sons and daughters, he lived to be nine hundred and five years old, and
he died, “And Enos lived ninety years, and begat Cainan: and
Enos lived after he begat Cainan eight hundred and fifteen years, and begat
sons and daughters: and
all the days of Enos were nine hundred and five years: and he died.” (verses 9-11) “And Cainan lived seventy years, and begat
Mahalaleel:” (verse 12) Now
Cainan, I know it’s a hard, I’ve dug into the name, it’s hard to come up with
the origin of that name. Some feel it
means “sorrow,” some feel it means “to nest” or “take a position.” Other names are easier, that’s a very tough
one. “And Cainan lived seventy years,
and begat Mahalaleel:” (verse 12) Mahalaleel
is “to praise God” or “to bless God,” Mahal, “to praise,” “el” “God.” “and Cainan lived after he begat
Mahalaleel eight hundred and forty years, and begat sons and daughters: and all the days of Cainan were nine hundred
and ten years: and he died.” (verses
13-14) “And Mahalaleel lived sixty and
five years and begat Jared:” (verse 15) Jared means “to descend” or “to
come down.” “and Mahalaleel lived
after he begat Jared eight hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and
daughters: and all the days of
Mahalaleel were eight hundred ninety and five years: and he died.” (verses 16-17) “And Jared lived an hundred sixty and two
years, and he begat Enoch:” (verse 18) Enoch
means “to teach.” “and Jared lived
after be begat Enoch eight hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: and
all the days of Jared were nine hundred sixty and two years: and he died.” (verses 19-20) “And he died”
stops now, takes a break with Enoch. “And
Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat Methuselah: and Enoch walked with God after he begat
Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:” (verses
21-22) Now it’s interesting, we
don’t know if Enoch walked with God before he had Methuselah, it doesn’t say
that, it says “after he begat Methuselah he walked with God.” We know that Methuselah, his name means “when
he dies, it shall come,” or “his death shall bring.” And he names him Methuselah because God
evidently communicated to him that in the day that Methuselah died, that is
when the Flood was going to come, the earth was going to be destroyed. If you had a baby, and God told you,
supernaturally, ‘You see this kid?’ ‘Ya,’ ‘Well as long as he lives, I’m
going to forestall my judgment. In the
day that kid dies, the world’s gonna be judged.’ You’d watch that kid carefully. He has a cold, you get a little nervous, ‘Can
I get a bike?’ ‘No, stay in your room, play etch-a-sketch, be safe.’ Now the beautiful thing is, Methuselah
lives longer than any human being that ever lives. God says when this one dies, judgment’s going
to come, and then that one lives longer, it’s a picture of God’s grace, his longsuffering,
he lives longer than any human ever lived.
But it says that Enoch, after Methuselah was born, something he
understood, something came upon his heart, that he then walked with God. He was a preacher and a Prophet, we know that
we’re told in the Book of Jude, that Enoch preached, he said he saw the Lord
coming with ten thousands of his saints.
A remarkable man, no doubt. “And
Enoch walked with God” in cooperation with God, “after he begat
Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:” (verse 22)
now it’s interesting, it says that Enoch walked with “the God” after he begat
Methuselah three hundred years, and he begat sons and daughters. “and all the days of Enoch were three
hundred sixty five years:” (verse 23) So
he walked with God for 300 years. That
must be something, huh. “and Enoch
walked with God: and he was not;
for God took him.” (verse 24) “God
seized him, God snatched him away,” Enoch, this interesting person, he’s only
one of two people in the Scripture that don’t die, Elijah is taken up in a
fiery chariot, Enoch is taken by God.
[Comment: look a few chapters
beyond where Elijah is taken up in a fiery chariot, and you’ll see that Elijah
is somewhere else, and he actually writes a letter to the king of Israel. This showing that God, the LORD,
had honoured Elijah’s request for retirement after he had trained Elisha, and
this chariot ride was taking Elijah somewhere else, where he went into
retirement, but he still knew enough about what was going on in Israel that it
caused him to write a letter to the king of Israel. So Elijah probably grew old and died at some
point in time, in the area where God took him to, somewhere outside of Israel
proper. The Bible itself proves Elijah
wasn’t taken to “heaven,” the area of God’s throne, in a flaming chariot. So, we don’t know where God took Enoch, the
Bible doesn’t tell us. We like to make
up our own doctrinal beliefs based upon what we want to believe, going beyond
what the Bible teaches and says. We
weren’t there, so we don’t know. We’ll
find out later.] Look, this gives us an
interesting picture of the Flood, because Jesus told us it would be like the
days of Noah when the Son of man came.
So as we look at this scene there are three groups of people, there are
those who are judged in the Flood, there are those who are spared and kept
through the Flood, Noah and his family, and there is Enoch, whose taken out
before it comes. And the same groups of
people are in the world today. There are
certainly those, the children of Israel, those who are truly Jews, who will be
preserved through the Great Tribulation [World War III]. [Comment:
The Jews are only one tribe in the nation of Israel, out of 11 other
tribes. 10 of those tribes, called “the
Kingdom of Israel,” were taken into captivity, transported to the region of the
Caspian Sea, where they disappeared from view historically. They are out there, somewhere in the world,
and will be brought back to the land of Israel a short while after Jesus’s 2nd
coming. So the Jews, per se, are not
the entire nation of Israel, only one twelfth part of the overall nation of
Israel. The Jewish race is made up of
two and a half tribes, the tribe of Judah, half the tribe of Benjamin, and the
tribe of Levi, all melded into whom we call “Jews.” Pastor Chuck Smith admitted that the other 10
tribes are out there, but wouldn’t speculate where, and neither will I.] There are those who will be judged, and there
are those who will be taken out before judgment comes. ‘But wait a minute Pastor Joe, Enoch is
only one person.’ So are we, we’re
the Bride of Christ, the Bride of Christ, we’re one person, one body, the Body
of Christ, to be taken out before judgment comes. [Some Christian denominations believe we’ll
be taken out to a place of safety somewhere on earth, other denominations
believe we’ll be taken out of this world, up to heaven, in a rapture just
before the 7-year tribulation strikes, the Bible is not totally clear which, or
else there wouldn’t be two distinct beliefs on this subject. But Jesus did state very clearly in Revelation
3:10, “Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee
from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them
that dwell upon the earth.” We can’t
really say for sure how Jesus will “keep us” from the hour of temptation, the
Tribulation, World War III, we just know that he promised to do just that. So believe what you want, we’ll find out for
sure at the proper time. I just choose
to believe Revelation 3:10 and leave the rest to Jesus to carry out.] Enoch lived in a time where he takes away all
of our excuses. We’re going to read that
in these days the earth was filled with violence, it was filled with
immorality, they were perverting everything of God, in the culture, people were
doing just whatever they wanted to do.
God’s own heart was grieved as he looked at the wickedness of man, and
the imagination of their own heart was only continually evil, it never ceased. And yet in the middle of that, Enoch walked
with God. You can walk with God in the
culture we live in. Enoch did not have a
New Testament, he had a vision of the Lord coming with ten thousand of his
saints, we don’t know what he understood about atonement. He didn’t have the indwelling of the Holy
Spirit like you and I have.
[Comment: We don’t know that, he
may have. Some believe the Old Testament
saints did, some believe they didn’t, again, we’ll find out later. This belief that the Old Testament saints,
like Moses, Abraham, David, the Prophets, didn’t have the indwelling Holy
Spirit like we do is a Calvary Chapel doctrine, and not necessarily true. Personally, I believe they did have the
indwelling Holy Spirit, we’ll find out later.]
If Enoch could do it, you and I can do it. You’re not interested in doing it? pray for
me, I am. I want to be walking with God
when the Trumpet blows, because this is a category I want to be in. But if Enoch could do it in his generation,
we can do it in ours. Look, he had a
real sense, ‘This is not going to go on the way it is,’ I hope you have
that sense as we look at the world we live in.
It can’t just continue to go the way it’s going, because it is
precipitating in evil, in violence, in technological warfare, in our ability to
destroy one another, in diseases and viruses.
[In February 2022 Vladimir Putin’s Russian Federation invaded the
Ukraine, and that war, with the same devastation not seen since World War II,
has been going on for over a year now.
From 2020 to 2022 the corona virus swept the earth, killing millions,
the war in Ukraine is a proving ground for modern weapons’ systems, just like the
Spanish Civil War was just before World War II, and the war in Ukraine is
bringing about a re-armament of European nations not seen since World War II,
and may yet cause or bring about the creation of The United States of Europe
prophecied in the Books of Daniel and Revelation (see https://unityinchrist.com/prophecies/2ndcoming_4.htm). Pastor Joe was giving this sermon on the 21st
of June 2006, I’m transcribing this on the 4th of June 2023. We’re getting far closer to the end, World
War III, and the 2nd coming of Jesus Christ than when Pastor Joe
preached this sermon.] Are human beings
going to just continue to go on with, just advance and advance, until our heads
are real big and arms all spindly, look like Martians with big bald heads and
little skinny arms? That ain’t gonna
happen. That’s not gonna happen,
judgment is coming, and Enoch in the midst of that era walked with God, and I
think it’s an encouragement to us. And
he “was not” it says, “for God took him.” Hebrews 11:5 said that he pleased God, he
believed God, he walked with God.
Methuselah,
Lamech & Noah
“And
Methuselah lived an hundred eighty and seven years, and begat Lamech.” (verse
25) now
Lamech again, it’s tough, I’ve gone through, Lamech, some feel that it means
“powerful,” some feel that it means “afflicted.” The two names that I struggle with the
meaning of, and I’ll talk about why, is Cainan, it’s not Keenan, it’s Cainan,
if you look in the Hebrew that’s the word, and Lamech, it’s hard to come up
with it’s meaning, to be dogmatic. But
we’re going to see that it’s important. “And
Methuselah lived after he begat Lamech seven hundred eighty and two years, and
begat sons and daughters: and
all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred sixty and nine years: and he died.” (verses 26-27) And when he died the Flood came. He was the oldest person that ever
lived. Imagine, he worked with Noah on
the Ark for over 100 years. Imagine
having this old guy, cranking around, and you’re looking at the Flood, Noah had
Shem, Ham and Japheth, he had three sons while he was building the Ark, because
he realized ‘I’ll never get it done by myself,’ so he had three sons
while he was building the Ark, and I think once in awhile he’d looked at
Methuselah and think ‘We need to work overtime, if the Flood’s coming when
this guy dies, we gotta hit it here, because, Methuselah sit down, just take it
easy, have a drink, rest for awhile. Get
off the scaffold!’ just imagine. The
oldest man in the Bible, what grace. “And
Lamech lived an hundred eighty and two years, and begat a son:” (verse 28) Now Lamech knew Adam, Adam is alive 55
years into the life of Lamech. He’s dead
by the time, Adam has died by the time he has this son, but Lamech has a son, “and
he called his name Noah,” “Comfort,” “Consolation,” “Rest,” “saying,
This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands,
because of the ground which the LORD
hath cursed.” (verse 29) Isn’t it interesting, who had God told that
to, ‘Cursed is the ground for thy sake’? He had told it to Adam in chapter 3. And now Lamech says the same words, no doubt
he had sat with Adam and talked with Adam, and Adam had said, ‘Yes, we’re
under the curse, man has fallen, but there’s One whose coming, and Lamech,
you’re part of the lineage, you’re part of the lineage, and it’s going to be
through your son and your lineage that God’s going to fulfill the promise, to
bring a Deliverer, that will crush the head of Satan, and destroy what’s
destroyed us in this fallen world.’ So
he names his son Noah, because he says, he’s going to comfort us concerning the
toil of our hands because of the ground the LORD
God hath cursed. “And Lamech lived
after he begat Noah five hundred ninety and five years, and begat sons and
daughters:
and all the days of Lamech were seven
hundred seventy and seven years: and he
died. And Noah was five hundred years
old: and Noah begat Shem, Ham, and
Japheth.” (verses 30-32) Life’s
getting cut short here with Lamech. So
Noah didn’t have kids until he’s 500, he’s a late bloomer. Did he forestall having kids because he knew
judgment was coming? [When I was called
during the late 1960s, early ‘70s, I had the attitude that I didn’t want to
have kids, because we all felt, as the Calvary Chapels did, that Jesus’ 2nd
coming was close, judgment was coming soon.
That is an understandable mentality for the times.] I don’t think we should do that. You know, I hear people in the church say ‘Why
should I go to college, why should I do this, why should I have kids,’ because
you know, Jesus said ‘Occupy till I come.’ Some generation has to be
interrupted, understand that, somebody’s going to be in college for ten years
[slow learner 😊] and getting their medical diploma, and as
it’s getting put in their hand, the Trumpet’s gonna blow, that’s gotta happen
to some doctor somewhere [for those who believe in the Rapture]. Some young couple, Christian couple are going
remain pure until their wedding night, which every young Christian couple
should do, and they’re going leave their wedding and the Trumpet’s going to
blow, and they won’t regret it, when they stand in his presence, they will not
regret it when they stand in his presence.
Because he says if you honour me I will honour you, there will be a
crown, they will not regret it.
Somebody’s gotta work on some antique car for five years, just when it’s
done the Trumpet’s gonna blow, it’s gotta happen somewhere, somehow, sometime [see
https://www.unityinchrist.com/mathew/Matthew24-1-31.htm]. It’s gonna be the Eagles, in the Superbowl,
down by two points, five seconds left, kick the field goal, it’s going through
the uprights, and the Trumpet blows, and we never see it, that’s alright, come
on Lord, get us out of here, that’s alright.
And maybe Noah waited 500 years, but somewhere along the line now at 500
years he decides to have Shem, Ham and Japheth, he has these sons.
What
Do The Names In The Line Of Seth Spell Out?
Now,
we followed this line, these names, very interesting. Again, I struggle with Cainan and I struggle
with Lamech. But Adam, we know that
means “Man,” “Seth” means “appointed,” Enosh means “mortal,” Mahalaleel means
“the blessed God,” Jared means “to descend,” or “to come down,” Enoch means
“teaching,” Methuselah means “death shall bring,” Lamech probably means “the
afflicted,” and Noah means “comfort.” So
if in fact Cainan, and Chuck Missler says Cainan means “sorrow,” if you take
their names and just study through, this is the line of Seth to Noah, to
Abraham, to Jesus Christ, those names, those ten names say this: ‘Man appointed mortal sorrow, but the
blessed God will come down teaching that his death shall bring the afflicted
comfort.’ Amen [applause]. ‘Man appointed mortal sorrow, but the
blessed God will come down teaching that his death shall bring the afflicted
comfort.’ Not hidden in there by
Moses or by some ancient rabbi, but by our God, the lineage, the line. Now maybe that explains to us when we get
into chapter 6, why Satan I believe begins to try to mess that line up, so
actively.
Genesis
6:1-4
“And
it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and
daughters were born unto them, 2 that
the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they
took them wives of all which they chose. 3
And the LORD
said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is
flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred
and twenty years. 4 There
were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of
God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them,
the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.”
What
Does The Term “Sons of God” Mean?
Chapter
6 says this, and we’ll get through some verses here, ““And it came to pass,
when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born
unto them,” (verse 1) now that’s sons of Adam there, it means Cain’s
family, Seth’s family, all men, mankind “that the sons of God saw the
daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all
which they chose.” (verse 2) “of all which they chose” adds a little
violence to it, they just took whatever they wanted of womankind. “And the LORD
said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is
flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred
and twenty years.” (verse 3) Now it doesn’t mean that man would live to be
120 years old, it meant it would be 120 years until the Flood came. “There were giants in the earth in those
days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the
daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became
mighty men which were of old, men of renown.” (verse 4) Now that’s an interesting idea, “there
were giants in the earth in those day; and also after that, when the sons of
God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them,
the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.” Alright, what are we going to do with
that? An interesting idea. I’m going to do the strange thing with it,
you can do the same thing with it, if you like.
Men began to multiply, Adam, mankind, not Seth, not Cain, mankind in
general. There’s two views here, what
this is talking about. Some scholars
feel that this is what they call “the righteous line of Seth.” And the righteous line of Seth, these men
from this line we followed, start to go into Cain’s daughters, the Cainanitish
women, and instead of being separate, they compromise, and there’s some kind of
freakish birth that takes place, and they are tyrants, some type of giant or
some kind of strange birth taking place out of that relationship. Now, first of all, I have some problems with
that, because there is no righteous line of Seth anywhere in the Bible. The phrase is never used. There’s a Messianic line, but the Messianic
line goes through the lives of sinners, you read Jesus’ genealogy. Rahab’s there, David’s there, committed
adultery and murder, Abraham’s there, who lied, you can go through that
genealogy, there’s a Messianic line. But
the Bible knows nothing about a righteous line of Seth, all of Seth’s
descendants drowned in the Flood, that righteous line. And all of Seth’s descendants had to
sacrifice lambs, because they were sinners.
There’s no righteous line of Seth.
And then the question would be, what about the daughters of Seth? It doesn’t say anything about the daughters
of God and the sons of men. It’s only
the sons of God and the daughters of men.
What are we talking about here? All
of the ancient scholars, even Hebrew grammatical scholars, what they struggle
with is the phrase “sons of God.” There
it is used three times in the Old Testament, it’s “bene Elohim” and it’s in
Job, and in all three times, Job, chapter 1, verse 6, chapter 2, verse 1 and
chapter 38, verse 7, it’s speaking about the angels. In fact, the Septuagint, and I have one here,
translates it 285 years before Christ in Alexandria, Egypt, they just translate
it, “angels of God went into the daughters of men,” because “the
daughters of men” there in the Hebrew is “the daughters of Adam,” not the
daughters of Cain or daughters of Seth, but daughters of humankind. So the Septuagint just translates it “the
angels of God.” Kyle and Deglitch,
Kyle says “the natural thing, if you’re going to exegete the phrase is, to
translate it “the angels of God,” because that’s the way it’s translated
in Job.” We have a variant, the Bar
Elohim, which is in Daniel chapter 3, when Nebuchadnezzar looks into the
fire with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego and he sees a fourth person, where it
says “one like the Son of God” that’s Bar Elohim, a Divine Being he sees
there. Twice in the Psalms there’s
another variant, Bene Eleme, Psalm 29, verse 1, and 85, verse 6. But all of these verses are speaking of
angels throughout the Bible. So you have
this very strange idea here, of the “sons of God going into the daughters of
men,” and people want be repulsed by that, this is just strange stuff. What are we going to do with this? How are we going to handle this? Josephus, Flavius Josephus tells us that
these were the fallen angels, who were in the days of Christ, and that they
went into, they took women, they desired them, whatever they wanted, and that
their offspring were giants. And then
Josephus says, this description resembles what the Greeks talk about when they
talk about the Titans and demigods, and it’s in Josephus Book One, chapter
3. Then Josephus says in another place,
when he talks about the giants that were born in this relationship, Josephus
says the bones of these giants are still available in this day to be examined
and inspected, Book 5, chapter 2. So we
have a very interesting and strange picture taking place here. In the Early Church, the Church fathers,
Philo of Alexandria, Justin Martyr, Tertullian, Julian, [and many others I
couldn’t understand him saying] they all said these are fallen angels. This was something malevolent taking place
where the angels were trying to stop the Messianic line. And they were polluting the lineage, trying
to stop the Kinsman Redeemer from coming.
And it says they were in the earth in those days, and also afterward
when the sons of God came in into the daughters of Adam, to the humankind. Now look, whatever they were, they didn’t
drown in the Flood. The only people that
survived the Flood was Noah and his family, and it says Noah was righteous in
his generation, he found grace in the eyes of the LORD. There were no Nephilim on the Ark. It says here, in verse 4, “There
were giants” that’s Hebrew word “Nephilim” “in the earth in those days;”
and notice this, “and also after that, when the sons of God” again,
fallen angels, another outbreak “came in unto the daughters of men, and they
bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were
of old, men of renown.” Now as you
go through the Bible, you’re going to find the Rephaim, the Emim, the Avim, the
Horems, the Zamzummims, the Anakims, these are all tribes of giants. In fact it tells us in Deuteronomy chapter 3,
verse 11, that were 60 cities of the giants in Bashan. I’ve a book written in 1890-something, it’s
called The Great Cities of Bashan, and it gives the record of archaeologists
where they describe all of these huge basalt buildings with 18-foot ceilings,
with 12 and 16-foot doors on pin hinges that you can still push with your hand,
they still swing. Unbelievable, it’s
there, in the Baka Valley, there are some very strange huge structures, and the
[something, can’t make out] on those temples are as big as train cars, and they
have no idea of how they were moved or put into place. All of these giants, the interesting picture,
60 cities of the giants, then it describes Og when they come to Sihon, Bashan,
Og king of Bashan, and it said his bedstead was 13-feet long, Og of Bashan, now
that’s a big bed [see https://www.gotquestions.org/Og-king-of-Bashan.html]. That’s a big guy, Og. It’s interesting because it tells us in Psalm
22, when Christ is hanging on the cross, he prophecies and he [David]
says ‘Great bulls of Bashan have surrounded me.’ Well I don’t see that at Golgotha
when you look through the Gospels [they were invisible to humans, except for
Jesus, who could see them]. He said
they’re gaping with mouth’s like lions, the description of what was taking
place in the spiritual realm around Jesus Christ when he was on the cross, and
it says ‘The great bulls of Bashan,’ those who sired the
civilization of the giants in the area of Bashan, Christ said ‘they
surrounded me on the cross,’ when he looked, these huge fallen angels
tried to bring his demise, the end of the Messianic line, and no doubt they
thought when they had him on the cross, it was over, things going on behind the
scenes, no doubt. The argument against what
I’m saying is in Matthew chapter 22, when the Sadducees come to
Jesus and they say ‘Let us ask you a question, there was this man, he
married this woman, he died before he had children, so then his brother assumed
the responsibility to marry her, and he died before he had children. And there
were seven brothers, and it went all the way down to the seventh,’ and
I’m bailing out, I’m getting away from this girl, it goes all the way to the
seventh brother, none of them had children.
‘Therefore in the resurrection,’ they’re mocking because
Sadducees don’t believe in the resurrection or angels, ‘whose wife shall
she be?’ and Jesus says ‘You
don’t understand the Scripture or the power of God, because in the resurrection
we neither marry or are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in
heaven.’ So what we are
definitely told is the angels of God that are in heaven are not involved in any
of this kind of behavior. But both Jude
and Peter knew that Jesus had said those things, and this is what they have to
say to us, 2nd Peter 2:4-5 says, ‘If God spared
not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to Tartaros,’ the only
time we find that phrase in the Scripture, ‘and delivered them into
chains of darkness to be reserved unto the judgment of the great day. He spared not the old world, but he saved
Noah.’ So he’s telling us there
were angels that sinned in the days of Noah, he tells us in 1st
Peter chapter 3, verse 19. Jude
says this, it says ‘The angels,’ and he’s giving us the examples
of those who came under God’s judgment, ‘The angels which kept not their
first estate,’ they didn’t keep their principality, the order that God
had place them in, ‘but left their own habitation,’ eorotis
tense, they left once and for all, never to return, left it behind, ‘he
hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the
great day, even as Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities about them, in like
manner,’ tutoi, in the Greek, the grammatic rule, it goes back to the
angels, ‘Sodom and Gomorrah in like manner gave themselves over to
fornication, going after strange flesh, and are set forth an example of
suffering and vengeance and eternal fire.’
Jude says the angels sinned in the very same way that Sodom and
Gomorrah sinned, sexually going after strange flesh, and God has reserved them
to judgment. So both Peter and Jude
understood what Jesus is saying in Matthew, and are not at all hesitant to say
that this is what happened with the fallen angels in the days of Noah. Very strange idea. What does that mean for us, that when Christ
comes it will be as in the days of Noah?
I’ll tell you this, I’m glad I’m getting Raptured and getting out of
here. Because I have a feeling that the
post-Rapture world is going to be a very strange place. It says in Thessalonians that the Lord is
restraining, the Holy Spirit is restraining right now. Again, if he’s restraining war, if he’s
restraining abortion, if he’s restraining violence, he’s doing a bad job. He’s restraining something much darker and
much more malevolent, and God will not let those spiritual forces go again on
this planet, until the Church is taken out of the way. Interesting, the Septuagint says one of the
ancient tribes of giants were called the Rephaim, but that word can also mean
“illness,” it can also mean “death,” but this translated some 300 years before
Christ, they had no hesitation to translate “giants” as Rephaim, because they
knew it was one of the tribes of giants.
In Isaiah chapter 13, in our English Bibles is says one thing, it
says, let me read it, you don’t have anywhere to go, do you? You’ll like this, don’t leave, because I have
a picture to show you of a fossil of one of these giants. I do.
He’s only 12-foot tall, this one.
King James says “Lift ye up a banner upon the high mountain, exalt
the voice unto them, shake the hand, that they may go into the gates of the
nobles. I have commanded my sanctified
ones, I have also called my mighty ones for mine anger, even them that
rejoice in my highness.” (verses 2-4) When
Isaiah is translated by those 70 Greek scholars in Egypt they said “Lift
up the standard on the mountain, the plain, exalt the voice of them, beckon
with the hand, open the gates you rulers, I give command, and I bring you them,
giants are coming to fulfill my wrath, rejoicing at the same time, and
insulting.” ‘Giants are coming to
fulfill my wrath,’ you’ll find it in Job, if you go through the
Septuagint and you get a lexicon for it and you look up the word Rephaim, which
is one of the tribes of the giants, it’s very interesting to see all the places
the King James translates “death” or something else where these ancient Hebrew
scholars didn’t hesitate to translate “giants,” very interesting. Well maybe you’re not interested, I’m
interested. What about giants in
America? We saw one last night, beat the
Mav’s I know.
The
Physical Evidence For Giants
This
is a book called “Giants,” I have one that was written in 1876 that I didn’t
bring because somebody had to copy it for me by page by page, and it was
written by a man who was a Hebrew scholar, a believer in 1876, and he traces
all of the titans and all of the Greek mythology, and he ties it all to Genesis
6, and he gives you the history of all of these things. I have another one, ‘The Great Cities of
Bashan,’ this book is in print, you can look at it afterwards, please don’t
walk away with it. It says in here that
there are detailed, and the writer in the book, says the Romans, when they came
to Great Britain, it says they fought seventeen foot tall Celtic giants with
legions, explorers Vespucian, Coronado, Desoto, Marabess, they all talk about
encountering giants. Let me give you a
few, “Large bones in stone graves, in Williamson County and White County,
Tennessee were discovered in the early 1800s, the average stature of these
giants, 7-feet,” ah, these are the little ones, after the Flood. Ah, “1833, soldiers digging in Rompach
Rancho, California discovered a male skeleton 12-feet tall, the skeleton was
surrounded by carved shells, stone axes, artifacts. The skeleton had double rows of upper and
lower teeth. Unfortunately this body was
secretly buried because the local Indians became upset…” This just gives you one of these after
another. “In Ohio, 1872, an urban mound
was discovered to contain three skeletons that in life would have stood at
least 8-foot tall, each also had double rows of teeth in the upper and lower
jaws. A 9-foot, 8-inch skeleton
excavated near Mount Neer, in Brewersville, Indiana in 1879.” “At La Crescent, Wisconsin, mounds were found
to contain giant bones, five miles north of Dresbach, bones of people over
8-foot tall were found.” “Near Toledo,
Ohio, twenty skeletons were discovered with jaws and teeth twice as large as
those of present-day people.” The count
also noted the odd hieroglyphics that were found around those bodies. “1931, skeletons from 8 and a half to 10-foot
long were found in Humboldt Lakebed in California.” “World War II, author Ivan T. Senderson tells
how his crew was bulldozing through sedimentary rock when it stubbled upon what
appeared to be a graveyard, in it there were crania,” that’s heads, “that
measured 22 to 24 inches from the base to the crown, nearly three times as
large as an adult human skull. Had the
creature to whom these skulls belonged been properly proportioned, they were of
undoubtedly have been at least 12-foot tall or taller.” This gives incident after incident after
incident of these things that are excavated.
Here’s an interesting one, I like this one. This is from an autobiography by Bill Cody,
William F. Cody, “Buffalo Bill’s Life Story,” published by Ferar and
Rhinehart Inc., 1920, on page 114, in case you’re interested, if you can
remember that. It says “While we were in
the sandhills scouting the Nabarro County, the Pawnee Indians brought into the
camp some very large bones, one of which our surgeon pronounced to be the thigh
bone of a human being. The Indians said
the bones were those of a race of people who long ago had lived in that
country. They said these people were
three times the size of a present-day man, that they were so swift and strong
they could run by the side of a buffalo, taking the animal on one arm, tearing
off the leg and eating it as they ran.”
Hey, you can go find this yourself, I just gave you where. “These giants, said the Indians, denied the
existence of the Great Spirit, when they heard thunder or saw lightning, they
laughed and declared that they were greater than the Great Spirit. This so displeased the Great Spirit that he
caused a deluge, the water rose higher and higher, until it drove these proud
giants from the lowlands to the hills, and then from the hills to the
mountains, and at last even the mountaintops were submerged, and the mammoth
men were drowned. After the Flood
subsided, the Great Spirit came to the conclusion that men had been too large
and powerful, he therefore corrected his mistake,” now this is of course not
Biblical, this is their stories, “by creating a race the size and strength of
men in the present day, this is the reason, the Indians told us, that the man
of modern time is small and not like the giants of old. The story has been handed down among the
Pawnees from generation to generation.
Who can tell it’s origin?” Look,
these kind of things are not hidden, to me these things are around, where we
have, I believe, after this remarkable genealogy in chapter 5, “Man
appointed mortal sorrow, but the blessed God will come down, teaching that his
death shall bring comfort,” Satan stepping right into the middle of
that, trying to defile the genetic pool, so that there couldn’t be a Kinsman
Redeemer. In fact, it tells us in 1st
Peter chapter 3, that Christ descended, and that he preached, not evangelize or
koroso, he made proclamation to the spirits, not the souls, that were
disobedient, ‘when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of
Noah, while the ark was preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved
by water.’ That Jesus Christ
descended to some place where these angelic beings were kept in chains, and he
made a proclamation to them, he didn’t preach the Gospel, he made a
proclamation to these spirits of his victory, that he hadn’t been defeated on
the cross at all. And I believe that
took place between his resurrection and his ascension, because he had to be
able to say ‘Death, where is thy sting, grave where is thy victory,’ Peter
said he descended and proclaimed to them his victory to these “spirits,” look
into Vines Expository Dictionary, it says this has to be speaking of spirits or
angels, it isn’t souls. [Comment: I agree with Pastor Joe, Jesus had to have
descended to give this proclamation after his resurrection, which would have
occurred around sundown at the end of a weekly Sabbath, and the following
sunrise when Jesus actually met Mary Magdalene right outside the tomb, which
was just before his ascension to God the Father’s throne, and then he came back
down to appear to the disciples in Galilee.
Jesus didn’t descend to witness to these fallen angels during the three
days and three nights when his body lay in the tomb, it had to have been from
the evening of his resurrection to just before the following sunrise when he
met Mary Magdalene. This clears up a lot
of doctrinal error within the Body of Christ on this set of verses in 1st
Peter 3:18-20.] He made proclamation to
the spirits who were disobedient when the longsuffering of God waited in the
days of Noah, when Jesus was raised from the dead, he went straight to them,
straight at them, and he proclaimed his victory right to there faces, because
they had tried to stop him from coming.
From the murder of Cain, to this outbreak before the Flood, to Pharaoh
killing all the firstborn, drowning them in the Nile, to the giants in the Land,
when the children of Israel, Numbers chapter 13, verse 33, they come into the
Land of Promise, ten of them are afraid, Joshua and Caleb want to go in, ten
said ‘We saw there the giants, the Nephilim,’ same word, Moses
wrote Genesis, Moses wrote Numbers, ‘We saw the Nephilim, the sons of
Anak, we were like grasshoppers in their sight, they consume the inhabitants of
the land,’ they were in Canaan.
No wonder God said wipe out all the inhabitants of Canaan. Who knows what was intermingled there? All the way, you follow the history all the
way through, Revelation chapter 12 of course gives us the picture of the
man-child that was going to come forth, and Satan pursuing Israel and his
Messianic line, waiting for it, to destroy this One that would crush his head. This is a part of that, I believe, a good
picture of what had taken place there in Genesis. So, “And it came to pass, when men began
to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,
that the sons of God” bene
Elohim, “the angels of God saw the
daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them” women
“wives of all which they chose. And the
LORD
said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is
flesh:” because there was this offspring that
was flesh, that was polluted, “yet
his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
There were giants in the earth in those days;” what a strange idea,
you got that 12-footer? Just put the one
up, no, not those guys, that’s the guy that wrote the book, put that one back,
look at that guy, that’s a normal human being standing inbetween those two
guys, now there we go, that’s a train car he’s leaning against there, that man
is in proportion, he’s not built out of proportion, he is 12-foot 2 inches tall, man, the Mav’s could have used
him, huh. How did it happen? “and also after that, when the sons of God
came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the
same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.” Which
were the Titans, the demigods, where all the mythology was born from, they “became
the mighty men which were of old, men of renown.” And next week we will pick up here in
Genesis chapter 6, in verse 5 and head into the Flood. So read ahead, hopefully next week we’ll get
through several chapters. Over 200
cultures around the world, I’ll mention some of them, have records of the
Flood. How about these Pawnee
Indians? There’s over 200 cultures
around the planet, that in their ancient history, from the Incas, the Mayans,
all talk about a worldwide flood. And
then when we get to the end we do have some aerial shots that someone gave me
here that have been declassified from 1949 of Mount Ararat, they’re black &
whites, but we can put them up and you can see something sticking out of the
glacier at about 15,000 foot elevation.
We’ll show you those at the end, so you have to come back if you want to
see those. We’ll even give you latitude
and longitude on them. But let’s stand
and let’s pray, have the musicians come.
And next week we’re going to look at the earth, filled with violence,
filled with immorality, just think of the culture that we’re living in, and you
think ‘Lord, give us one more revival, give us one more great awakening,
give us, while you’re restraining all of these powers, all of this deception,’ I
don’t care, as long as he restrains it till we’re out of here. ‘But give us one more revival before you
come, Lord.’ …[transcript of a connective expository sermon on Genesis
